At the China Chef

She sits alone, jacket hugging

her shoulders, sipping tea, picking

at scallops with straw mushrooms,

white rice, wondering why she came

here again, here where she and John

dined on shrimp drenched in sweet

and sour sauce, where she taught him

to hold chopsticks. As she eats, she turns

pages in Good Housekeeping, tries

to read another paragraph of this month's

novella. Must be a sad story,

the waiter thinks, seeing her tears.

From Szechwan Shrimp & Fortune Cookies: Poems from a Chinese Restaurant, Wilda Morris, RWG Press, 2008

Wilda Morris, an award-winning poet, is the President of Poets & Patrons of Chicago and past president of the Illinois State Poetry Society.
