Chimneys and Tile-roofed Houses

By William Zhou

In the country where crops planted and cut by people

At the edges of cities where poor people living together

Chimneys and tile-roofed houses

Remain the ancestral sights

Tile-roofed houses cover the warm of stoves and pots

Chimneys speak the folk dialects

While buildings pushing tile-roofed houses down

While cities narrowing country fields down

Stoves lose their rights of burning wood

Chimneys dare not smoke with mouths shut

If the disasters come

If the wars come

The destroying stoves and being unlucky are the people’s misery

Tile-roofed houses will become a pile of tiles

Chimneys will become some pieces of bricks

The archaeologists in the future

Will pick up a piece of tile began from the Han Dynasty

Will dig out a piece of brick began from the Qin Dynasty

They want to renovate our changeful existence

They want to translate our complicated feelings
