在那楼梯的边上，

有一个黑人姑娘，

她长得十分美丽，

一边走一边歌唱……

她心里有什么欢乐？

她唱的可是情歌？

她抱着一个婴儿，

唱的是催眠的歌。

这不是她的儿子，

也不是她的弟弟；

这是她的小主人，

她给人看管孩子；

一个是那样黑，

黑得象紫檀木；

一个是那样白，

白得象棉絮；

一个多么舒服，

却在不住地哭；

一个多么可怜，

却要唱欢乐的歌。

At the edge of the stairs

There is a black girl

Who looks very nice

Pacing and singing...

What is the glee inside her?

Is she singing a love song?

In her arms there is a baby;

She is singing a lullaby.

It is neither her son,

Nor her younger brother,

But her little master;

She is a babysitter.

One looks so black

Like dark rosewood;

Yet the other so white

Like cotton wool.

One is so comfortable

But cries constantly;

Yet the other so poor

But sings happily.
