In the Desert...

by Stephen Crane

In the desert

I saw a creature, naked, bestial,

Who, squatting upon the ground,

Held his heart in his hands,

And ate of it.

I said, "Is it good, friend?"

"It is bitter─bitter," he answered;

"But I like it

"Because it is bitter,

"And because it is my heart."

“很苦──很难吃,”他回答;

Our Share of Night to Bear

by Emily Dickinson

OUR share of night to bear,

Our share of morning,

Our blank in bliss to fill,

Our blank in scorning.

Here a star, and there a star,

Some lose their way.

Here a mist, and there a mist,

Afterwards—day!
